He hit the machine, but nothing happened. The fire grew. I felt relieved. I’d rather die. Then, I heard banging on the door.

“Sarah! Sarah!” It was David.

“David!” I yelled. “I’m in here!”

David kicked the door in and ran through the flames. Mark was rambling and shaking the machine. Ryan tried to stop him, but Mark pushed him away. He ran out. David untied me and pulled me toward the door. Mark realized what was happening and chased us.

The ceiling collapsed, burying him. Ryan was small and followed us. David ran back and scooped him up. We escaped.

“Dad…”

Ryan stared at the burning building. David and I told the police what happened. We went home. Ryan was sent to an orphanage and adopted. David, Lily, and I moved to a new city. David and Lily were with me.

Life had just begun.
