Chapter 5
Selena’s POV
I glanced at Zane with lifted eyebrows, and he immediately got defensive.
“What? We re just coming from the pack clinic. I’m just going to drop her off at her place, and from there we’ll continue to dinner.” He snapped.
I shrugged at him nonchalantly. “I didn’t say anything.” I reminded him.
Zane flushed with embarrassment as he realized that he had gotten defensive for nothing. When Linda saw me she gave me a soft smile, though her eyes shone with glee.
“Luna Selena, please I hope you don’t mind. I’m sorry for delaying your anniversary dinner.” She said with a pout.
Zane scoffed. “Why are you always apologizing?” He scolded. “You had a fever, and you‘ re pregnant. Your well- being comes first!”
I didn’t react to his words. I just simply brushed them off, and got into the backseat of the car, leaving Zane and Linda in front.
Throughout the drive to Linda’s place, I sat silently at the back watching as the two of them chatted, joked, and even flirted with each other. They had even forgotten that I was there. I was like the stranger–the outsider. That realization was not surprising to me anymore.
When we finally got to Linda’s house, it almost took ages for Linda to get down. from the car. She was obviously reluctant to leave. I glanced at the time. It was almost 7pm, and I was getting impatient but I kept silent.
“Hey Linda,” Zane called when she was finally going. “What are you eating for dinner? You know that the baby needs to have enough nutrients from his mother.”
A sense of nostalgia passed through me, as I remembered when Zane treated me this way, always trying to make sure I was comfortable and satisfied. However, everything changed when Linda came into our lives.
I could see something flash through Linda’s eyes, and I immediately knew what was going to happen next.
Linda bit her lips with a small shrug. “I have some leftovers from yesterday, it will be more than enough.” She said, hanging her head miserably. Zane frowned and shook his head firmly.
“No. That‘ s totally unacceptable. Eating leftovers can be dangerous to you and the baby.”
She shook her head with a soft look on her face, but her eyes shone with glee as her plan worked. “It’s fine, Zane. I’ll be fine.” She replied.
Zane shook his head firmly. “No. Get in the car, you’ll have dinner with us.” He declared.
Linda frowned and shook her head slowly.
“Zane, I can’t do that. This is your anniversary dinner, remember?” She replied with worry in her furrowed eyebrows.
Zack scoffed, and waved her words away dismissively. “So what? Am I complaining? It’s not a request, it’s an order. You have to be taken care of properly. It’s just dinner, nothing special.”
My patience was running thin as I thought of how much time I had wasted–time I would have used for more productive things.
Linda’s face spread into a wide smile, and her eyes gleamed in triumph. “Thank you so much, Zane.” She gushed, then she paused and her smile faded.
“Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry, Luna Selena. I hope you don‘ t mind.” She said with a small pout, and wide pleading eyes, that were obviously faked.
I didn’t respond. I turned my face in the other direction, as irritation surged through me.
“Oh no, Luna Selena is mad at me, Zane. I’m crashing into your dinner arrangements. I’m not going!” Linda cried out, her voice trembling. I glanced at her with an unimpressed look as tears welled up in her eyes.
Zane’s eyes darkened and he glared at me in fury. “What is wrong with you? Look at how you’ve upset her, and you know she’s pregnant!” He barked.
I lifted an eyebrow incredulously at him.
“What are you talking about?”
He growled. “Just because you cannot get pregnant doesn’t mean that you should bully Linda who is pregnant!” He scolded. “No wonder you can’t get pregnant with all that evil in your heart!”
