The director’s assistant took off her employee ID and said.

“I’m not loyal to the company, I am loyal to you Director, Sis Mia. If she quits, so do I.”

The assistant was too emotional. I was afraid she’d regret it. I blocked her and whispered.

“Don’t.”

My assistant, Sarah, jumped in to comfort me. “Mia, don’t sweat it. My family’s loaded. I don’t need this job. You came to our school to recruit, and if you hadn’t helped me out, I wouldn’t have applied to that dump. It’s a little company, and that place isn’t as big as my mom’s company.”

Sarah’s eyes suddenly lit up. “Hey, you could come work for my mom! You’re so talented, and even though we’re not in sales, you can convince my mom.”

I laughed. “I just quit. I need a break.”

Sarah pouted. “Fine. I’ll go home and be a rich bum for a while. But when you find a job, take me with you. I still want to be your assistant.”

The others were clearly tempted. I could see it in their eyes. The company didn’t get any new contracts. They couldn’t handle that load.

Brittany’s face twisted with anger. She glared at Sarah, but she couldn’t do anything about it. She didn’t want to say another word.

She was smart not to say another word. If the whole department quit, she couldn’t. She was so eager to take my place, but she wanted to enjoy the perks, not deal with
problems.

That’s when an unassuming black car pulled up. Jake got out. He walked toward me. Grabbed my wrist.

Whined like a little kid.

“You blocked me. I called you from other numbers, and you didn’t answer. Did I do something wrong? I’ll fix it. Don’t misunderstand me.”

I was holding the box. I couldn’t shake him off. The heat from his palm went through me. It made my skin crawl. I tried to stay calm.

“Please let go.”

Jake tried to pull the “puppy dog eyes” move. I had enough. I used every ounce of disgust to yell.

“Let go!”

The security guards heard me. They looked over. Jake flinched. He let go. I took a deep breath. I went back to being cold and detached.

“We’re over…”

“I don’t agree.”

Jake’s eyes teared up.

“Don’t break up with me, please? I’ll do whatever you want.”

I looked at Sarah. She got the signal. She snatched the box from my hands. I pulled out my phone. I started playing a video.

In the video, Brittany was wearing a skimpy dress. She wrapped herself around Jake like a snake. Jake didn’t push her away.

He put one hand on her waist. He was texting with the other. I was looking for him. He lied and said he was in a meeting.

Jake’s face went white. He stammered.

“Mia, let me explain. It’s not what you think…”

I held up a hand.

I let the video keep going. Brittany wrapped her arms around Jake’s neck. She started kissing him.

She kept grabbing him. After a few tries, Jake let her. He kissed her. They went into a hotel.

The next video was of them making out in the doorway. It was intense. Then the door closed.

Everyone knew what was going to happen. Those videos weren’t from the hotel.

The paparazzi took the videos.
