The Art of Not Missing You - Chapter 10
Gritting my teeth against the pain, I shot Ethan Foster a cold glare.
“Mind your words. You and I were nothing more than a former boss and a terminated employee.”
My words left him stunned.
“Sophia, are you seriously denying our five years together for this man?”
I almost laughed.
He was the one who had refused to acknowledge our relationship all this time. Now that I’d walked away, he had the audacity to accuse me of erasing our past.
“Don’t joke, Mr. Foster. I appreciate your… generosity these past five years. My wedding is in a week. You’re welcome to attend, if you’re interested.”
Ethan let out a derisive scoff.
“Wedding? Don’t tell me this whole charade was just to force me into marrying you!”
“I told you, now isn’t the right time. You’ve waited five years, what’s the rush?”
Even now, he was still delusionally confident.
I shook the diamond ring on my finger and the marriage certificate I’d just obtained today, my voice icy.
“Mr. Foster, perhaps your memory fails you. You and I are nothing more than employer and employee. Why would I ever expect you to marry me?”
“Go back to your girlfriend. I need to go home with my husband now.”
With that, I took Alexander Monroe’s hand, our fingers intertwining tightly.
Ethan Foster stared at the stamped marriage certificate in my hand, frozen in place.
When his gaze shifted to our joined hands, his fists clenched, and he lunged at Alexander in a fit of rage.
Alexander, fearing I’d get hurt, immediately released my hand and shielded me behind him.
My uncle Jack stormed out at the commotion and grabbed Ethan by the collar without hesitation.
“Ethan Foster, you dare show your face here? Since you’ve delivered yourself to me, don’t blame me for what happens next!”
For a brief moment, guilt flickered across Ethan’s face, but it was quickly replaced by fury.
“If I hadn’t come, you would’ve married my wife off to someone else!”
“If it weren’t for your meddling, Sophia would never have left me. She loved me so much, ”
My palm struck his cheek, twice, cutting him off.
“Ethan Foster, remember this: you were never more than my boss. Those were your exact words!”
In that moment, Ethan finally realized how carelessly spoken words had pushed me straight into another man’s arms.
“Sophia, I thought you’d lost your memory, I didn’t know how to explain! Those words meant nothing! Didn’t you once swear you’d never marry anyone but me?”
“I don’t care that you married this man. Divorce him tomorrow, come back with me, and I’ll marry you immediately!”
Just minutes ago, he claimed it wasn’t the right time to marry me.
Now that he knew I’d never return, he suddenly changed his tune.
“Ethan Foster, Olivia Summers is your real girlfriend. I have no interest in being the other woman.”
“I saw you kissing her at the concert. I saw the keepsakes you hid in your safe. Stop pretending you can have it all, it’s disgusting.”
“You couldn’t let her go for five years. Now that she’s back, cherish her properly. I hope you two stay together forever!”
And stop ruining other people’s lives.
Uncle Jack’s temper flared. He motioned for Alexander to take me inside.
Before the door even closed, I heard the sound of fists striking flesh.
“You bastard! You played with her feelings for five years, you deserve this!”
Worried Uncle Jack might go too far, I urged Alexander to keep an eye on things outside.
Instead, he pulled me into a gentle embrace.
“Sophia, your uncle knows his limits. If I go out there, things might get worse.”
The tremor in his body told me he wanted nothing more than to tear Ethan apart.
“Alexander, I’m sorry. I should’ve handled my past better. If this bothers you, ”
He pressed his forehead to mine.
“Sophia, you’re my wife now. No one will take you from me.”
Tears welled in my eyes as I kissed his cheek.
Through the window, Ethan, still being pummeled by Uncle Jack, saw us locked in an intimate moment. A sharp pain lanced through his chest.
He didn’t understand how I could fall for someone else so quickly.
But he knew one thing: once I made up my mind, there was no going back.
Unless Alexander hurt me as deeply as he had, Ethan would never get another chance.
In that moment, he felt like he’d lost everything.
Fulfilling his old promises to Olivia had just been about settling unfinished business. Once that was done, he’d planned to marry me.
How could I have moved on over something so trivial?
Only after reviewing the office surveillance footage did he finally grasp the depth of his mistakes.
But it was too late.
I was already in my wedding dress, exchanging vows with Alexander in a grand ceremony.
An anonymous text wished me happiness on my wedding day.
Later, Uncle Jack told me Ethan and Olivia had a bitter falling-out.
Their feud became public knowledge, and the entire company learned Olivia was the other woman who’d driven me away.
Ethan repaid every cruel trick she’d used against me tenfold.
But what did it matter?
Alexander and I had already begun our new life together.
