Once Upon a Time I Loved You - Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Kathleen felt relieved when the plane touched down at Milsworth International Airport. Clive had promised to pick her up with his wife, Grace Mandel. However, she noticed there was one more person by their side.
“Kathleen! We’re right here!“:
She approached them with a smile and gave Grate a hug. “Mrs. Atwood, you’re still as pretty and young as before!”
Waving at Clive, she teased him, “Mr. Atwood, you need to take better care of yourself to keep up with your young and pretty wife!”
Clive chuckled. “You little thing, teasing me the first thing after meeting me in many years!”
“That’s not teasing; I’m praising you. You look like an experienced photographer, like Max Riv, with that bushy beard of yours!”
He grumbled, “Ah, quit it! You’re acting like a rascal because Nathan has always doted on you!”
At the mention of Nathan, Grace asked, “Are you here alone? Didn’t Nathan come with you and send you off?”
Clive peered behind Kathleen. “Is Nathan taking your luggage for you? You’re not holding any luggage.”
Arm–in–arm with Clive and Grace, Kathleen dragged them out of the airport. “I don’t need anyone to send me off; I’m an adult. I make this trip alone. Mr. and Mrs. Atwood, let’s go. I’m starving!”
The couple walked along without noticing anything off. The other person who came with them ran after them. “Uh, Kathleen-”
Clive remembered something. He slapped himself on the head with a smile. “I’m so forgetful! I nearly left our driver behind.”
In reality, Kathleen had noticed the man in his 30s after she arrived at the airport. The handsome, scholarly man with broad shoulders looked gentle in his grey coat.
Clive introduced him to Kathleen, “Kathy, do you still remember David Clarke?”
She searched her memory before shaking her head vacantly. “I’m afraid I don’t. David, are you Mr. Atwood’s student too?”
Clive guffawed. “Do you really have no memory of him?”
Kathleen did not have any memory of David.
Blushing, David looked bashful. “Mr. Atwood, the past is the past. Please save my face.”
Clive laughed even louder. “Fine. Fine. I will drop it. Maybe you’ll find a chance to bring it up to Kathleen.”
David ran away, flustered. “I’ll get the car. Wait for me at the entrance. I’ll be quick.”
Kathleen watched him with a puzzled look. Finally, Grace solved her puzzle after seeing her confusion. “Kathy, remember that time in college when you delivered a love letter to a guy?”
Kathleen immediately recalled that incident, which was a huge misunderstanding. She had volunteered to deliver her shy roommate’s love letter to David when she learned about it, as she wanted to be a wingman.
She waited for the guy at a building and handed him the letter. Before she could explain, a few raucous guys beside them snatched the letter away and read it aloud.
Most love letters were filled with corny confessions. To Kathleen’s surprise, her shy roommate was bold and daring in writing the love letter. The roommate had written, “Your zipper is undone. Your package looks quite huge.”
Kathleen recalled how she froze on the spot. Baffled, David stared at her and apologized before he ran after his troublemaking friends who had read the letter aloud.
In the end, the explosive content of the letter turned Kathleen into a subject of gossip on campus.
Nathan was upset upon hearing the news. Kathleen explained many times that she did not have a crush on David, nor did she write the letter herself. Still, Nathan was angry, and the consequences were severe.
Kathleen did not know how Nathan pulled it off, but he persuaded the school president to send David to study abroad–a way to keep David away from Kathleen.
For that, Kathleen felt sorry for David and her roommate, who could not get to know each other better. She even got mad at Nathan for a while on this matter.
They waited at the terminal for David. Soon, he rolled to a stop before them in a car and rolled down the window. “Mr. and Mrs. Atwood… and Kathleen, hop in.”
The loving married couple got into the back passenger seats at the same time, leaving only the front passenger seat for Kathleen.
She stood by the car. David asked, “Kathleen, why aren’t you getting into the car?” She thought about it for a while before asking, “David, do you have a girlfriend?”
