My husband’s Million-Dollar Murder Plot - Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Victor and Ruby had clearly never anticipated any surprises. When they turned to see my face, both froze, as if struck by lightning.
“Lillian…” Ruby’s voice trembled, barely above a whisper.
Victor, on the other hand, stumbled back a few steps, his disbelief written across his pale face. The moment our eyes locked, he let out a panicked yell and collapsed onto the ground.
His wide eyes brimmed with confusion as he shouted, “How are you alive? This isn’t possible! We made sure there was no way out for you. This has to be some kind of hallucination!”
“Shut up! Stop rambling nonsense!” Ruby hissed at him, quickly trying to regain control of the situation.
Steeling herself, she marched toward me, lifting her chin in a feigned show of confidence. I didn’t waste a second. My hand shot out, landing a sharp slap across her face.
Ruby clutched her cheek, staring at me in stunned disbelief.
“Did you just hit me?!”
I flexed my stinging hand, staring her down with cold disdain.
“Yes, I did. And what about it? You’re a homewrecker who stole someone else’s husband. You deserve worse.”
Victor scrambled up from the floor, keeping his head down and avoiding my gaze like a coward.
“Let’s calm down,” the officer interrupted, his voice gruff but composed. He gestured toward the door. “If no one’s dead, this form is void. Any personal disputes should be settled elsewhere.”
I smiled, but my response was firm.
“No, officer. I want to press charges for attempted murder and insurance fraud.”
Victor’s face darkened immediately. He erupted, lunging toward me in rage.
“What are you talking about? You have no proof! Accusations without evidence are slander!”
But he didn’t get far. The officers, trained and ready, swiftly pinned him to the ground. I walked closer, meeting his furious eyes as I pulled a USB drive from my pocket.
“The evidence is all here,” I said, my tone unwavering. “Everything from you and Ruby Monroe kissing in the hotel hallway the night you tried to drown me, to the fraudulent insurance documents. I’ve kept it all.”
Victor sneered, though there was a nervous edge to it.
“All that proves is that I cheated, nothing more. And that document? It could be anything! Besides, there were witnesses who saw you fall into the water. You can’t tie this together!”
I tilted my head, feigning disappointment.
“Victor, if only you hadn’t underestimated me, perhaps you wouldn’t be in this position.”
I tapped the side of my glasses, smiling.
“These aren’t just glasses. They’re a waterproof recording device. I worried you might notice, but you were too busy laughing with Ruby to even pay attention. Everything you did that night was recorded. Every vile act. There’s no escaping it now.”
Victor’s expression shifted, his eyes hollowing as he mentally replayed that night. Then, as if realizing the full weight of his failure, he began to thrash against the officers restraining him.
“You conniving witch! You set me up!”
But no amount of yelling could change his fate. Victor was dragged off to an interrogation room, temporarily detained.
After completing my statement, I returned home and began packing up Victor’s belongings. Late that night, my phone buzzed with a call from an unknown number.
“You think you’ve won?”
The voice on the other end was unmistakable. It was Victor.
My stomach tightened with unease. How was he calling me? He was supposed to be in custody. Before I could ask, Victor continued, his tone dripping with smugness.
“We’ve got connections. A big shot heard about how you ‘framed‘ me and got me out. So now, it’s your turn to watch your back!”
