Love and Hate Are Gone - Chapter 5
I wasn’t worried Greg would see it. I knew he wouldn’t be coming home tonight. Sure enough, Greg called: “Kate, I’m so sorry. Ashley had a scare, and Mark’s not home, so I need to take care of her. Please don’t be mad.”
Remembering the pictures from Ashley, as she ate fruit that Greg cut for her, it just made me sick.
“Okay, take care of the pregnant woman, she’s more important.”
Greg paused for a moment and then said softly, “Kate, I’m so sorry for yelling at you today, I know it’s not easy with the baby gone.”
“But Ashley’s pregnant with my family’s grandchild, and you know we can’t pass down the family legacy anymore, I don’t want my parents to get sick if something happened to Ashley.”
His excuses were a joke.
“Be a good girl at home, it’s your birthday tomorrow. I booked the best hotel, and I have a surprise for you. I’ll come to pick you up tomorrow.”
But by noon the next day, Greg still wasn’t there. I set the signed divorce papers on the table and scheduled an audio recording to be sent to Greg.
Then, I grabbed my bags and went to the airport. Just as I arrived, Greg called again.
“Honey, I’m so sorry, some partners showed up at the office about next season’s clothing. I couldn’t get out of it.”
“I sent my secretary to pick you up. You know how you always wanted me to design a dress for you? I already did. I bet you’ll look like an angel when you put it on.”
“Okay.”
I hung up and saw two women nearby, staring at their phones in awe.
“Oh my god, the CEO is so cute, and he designed all these cute maternity dresses. I wish I was pregnant!”
“Oh, those dresses aren’t for just anyone. They’re all custom made for his wife. I heard there are hundreds of dresses, made of the most expensive fabric, and there are so many, she could wear them until her kid is graduating high school. Ugh, so jealous!”
“Yeah, I heard the CEO is scared to wake his wife up, so the fashion show is only for insiders, so your boyfriend must be amazing working for the CEO to show us these photos, so we can see what we are missing.”
The photos showed Ashley all dressed up with Greg’s arm around her as they went through all the clothes that were custom made for her.
Greg’s company was in the fashion industry and he was a gifted designer. I’d begged him to design one dress for me, and he’d always said he was too busy.
But he’d designed hundreds of pieces for Ashley. And when he said he had a dress waiting for me, I could only laugh at the irony.
It was time for my flight, so I turned off my phone and got on the plane. Greg was picking out clothes with Ashley all morning, before going to the hotel for the birthday party.
He imagined Kate coming out in his dress, looking like an angel.
