Love and Hate Are Gone - Chapter 4
“Honey, you’re so amazing. Mark can’t have kids. If Kate has a boy, he won’t be able to take over the company, and I’d suffer so much.”
Greg was breathless, the edges of his eyes red with desire. “Does Mark treat you well? Did he ever hurt you?”
“No, I’ve never been treated so well since I’ve been pregnant. He’s so worried about me. He even rubs my feet, and in bed, he’s so gentle.” Greg grimaced, “As long as he treats you well, and as long as you’re happy, that’s all that matters.”
“Mark, you’ve done so much for me. Since I can’t be yours, I’ll be yours tonight. I’m all yours.”
Greg was completely lost. He pulled her closer and they rolled into a tangle of limbs. I had never seen Greg, Mr. Cool and Collected, so completely out of control.
Tears streamed down my face as I stumbled back into the bedroom. Greg didn’t come back all night.
The next morning, he gave me a regretful smile, “Kate, I’m so sorry. I was gonna come back to you last night, but my mother kept me up all night talking. I couldn’t get away.”
I didn’t call him out on his lies, but just got up and went to the door. A bucket of garbage, leftovers and all, poured over me. Ashley appeared, holding the bucket with a triumphant grin.
“Kate, how’d you like watching Greg all over me last night?” she cackled.
“Miscarriages are rough, right? Good thing you don’t need to worry about it anymore, since you can’t have kids.”
“You tried getting pregnant again to steal my future spot as the CEO’s wife, huh? You’re only dreaming. Greg didn’t just pass up the company for me, but he helped me have a baby, and all your dead kids helped keep me healthy.”
I looked up, stunned, “What did you say?” “Don’t look so shocked. Why do you think Greg told you all your babies were buried? Why do you think he never let you see them? It’s because I told him it’s good for me!”
Despair, anger, disbelief poured into me all at once. So, that’s why Greg didn’t let me see my kids. How could he do this for Ashley?!
Ashley laughed, “Stop looking so pitiful. You’ve got no one to blame but yourself. If you’re such a terrible mother, your children deserve to be my baby’s food.”
I couldn’t take it anymore. I raised my hand and smacked Ashley across the face.
Smack!
My hand didn’t connect with Ashley’s face. Greg pulled her behind him, taking the hit himself.
He pushed me back hard, yelling, “Kate, what the hell do you think you’re doing?!”
Ashley pretended to cry, “Honey, I just wanted to cheer her up, to tell her to move on from the loss. She got all jealous of me and tried to pour garbage all over me, just because I’m having a baby.”
Before I could explain, Greg glared at me. “Kate, I didn’t know you were such a greedy
woman“!
“You couldn’t hold on to our kids, that’s your problem. Stop blaming Ashley and stop ruining her kindness. You don’t deserve what’s not yours. Apologize now!”
I’m the problem? Huh…
Looking at his face, he seemed like a total stranger.
“Greg, tell me the truth. What did you do with our babies‘ bodies?”
Greg frowned. “Of course they’re buried, didn’t I tell you?”
His acting was getting better and better. “Greg, you’re right. I shouldn’t have coveted something that was never mine. I promise I will not bother Ashley again.”
I turned and left without another word. Greg stared after me, his heart suddenly sinking. He wanted to call out to me but Ashley pulled him back.
“Honey, I got splashed with the garbage. I think I’m gonna throw up. Could you take me to the hospital?”
Greg hesitated for a second, but didn’t follow me.
Back at the house, I gathered all the gifts Greg had ever given me and threw them into the fireplace. Just as I was pulling out our marriage certificate, my phone rang.
“Kate, because I said I felt a little nauseous, Greg has brought the best OBGYNS from all over. He chartered a private plane just to get them here!
“Aren’t you jealous? You should be!”
I didn’t reply, watching as the marriage license went up in flames.
