Chapter 18: A Gift for Daddy

Back in their villa’s kitchen, Irene was humming softly as she prepared lunch. Outside in the driveway, Thomas adjusted his grip on the elegantly wrapped gift box as he wheeled Adam to their Irene’s front door. In a moment, the sound of the doorbell echoed through

the house.

“I’ll get it!” Lily’s excited voice rang out from inside. The door swung open to reveal a little angel in a powder blue dress, her dark curls bouncing as she rose on tiptoe to reach

the handle.

Her eyes lit up when she saw Adam in his wheelchair, Thomas standing behind him. “Uncle Adam! Thomas! Come on in!” She bounced back with the cutest attempt at grown- up grace, waving them inside.

“Mommy is still working on lunch,” Lily announced, trying to sound all grown–up. “Make yourself at home!”

Alex appeared as if by magic, every bit as well–mannered as his sister. Without being asked, he carefully poured water into crystal glasses, his little face scrunched in concentration. “Uncle Adam, do you want to watch TV while you wait?”

“I’m good, thanks,” Adam replied, his usual stern expression softening just a touch.

“Uncle Adam, since we’re neighbors now,” Lucas piped up with a grin, “you don’t have to

be so formal with us!”

Something made Adam smile. These kids didn’t seem to care at all about his wheelchair or that he was some big CEO. They just treated him like… well, like a normal person. It

was kind of nice, actually.

Lily suddenly produced a handful of colorful wrapped candies from her dress pocket, her

eyes sparkling with mischief. “Uncle Adam,” she whispered like she was sharing top–secret info, sneaking glances around for Irene. “I’ve been saving these forever! Mom never lets

me eat too many candies, but I want you to have them. Quick, take them before she catches us!”

Adam could smell that sweet baby shampoo scent as Lily leaned closer. Adam couldn’t help smiling as he reached for the candies, his long fingers gentle as he took them from

her tiny hands. He leaned forward slightly in his wheelchair, his stern features softening as he caught her earnest gaze.

“If I take all of these from you,” he asked, his deep voice gentling to match her conspiratorial whisper, “what will you have left?”

Lily’s earnest response came without hesitation. “That’s okay! I can save up some more and give them to you next time.”

Something flickered in Adam’s expression – surprise, maybe, or something deeper. With careful precision, he selected a single piece and tucked it into his breast pocket. The rest

he returned to Lily’s waiting hands.

“I don’t eat many sweets,” he explained, his CEO voice gone all soft and warm. “You keep these. I’ll bring you new ones next time – but remember to take care of your teeth.”

“We want some too!” Alex and Lucas chorused, crowding closer with hopeful expressions. Their hearts raced with excitement – after all, these weren’t just ordinary treats. These were candies from their father, even if he didn’t know it yet. How could they possibly miss out on that?

Adam’s “Alright” came more easily than he’d expected.

Irene came out of the kitchen, carrying plates. She couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow when she saw her kids practically glued to Adam’s side. “Food’s ready,” she called out. “What’s our rule?”

“Wash hands!” The kids yelled back, already racing each other to the bathroom.

Adam turned his chair to face Irene, their eyes meeting briefly before she looked away. “I don’t know what you usually eat. Don’t feel like you have to finish anything you don’t like.”

“Oh, we eat everything!” Thomas jumped in eagerly. “And I just know your cooking’s gonna be amazing!”

Irene acknowledged this with a slight nod. “Please, have a seat.”

Adam watched as she got ready to serve lunch. He couldn’t help noticing how she’d arranged everything just right – making sure all the dishes would be easy for him to

handle from his wheelchair, avoiding anything too messy or complicated. Despite her cool attitude, she’d clearly put a lot of thought into making sure he’d be comfortable.

The seating arrangement quickly became a subtle battlefield as Lucas and Lily maneuvered to claim the spots on either side of Adam, effectively displacing Thomas to the far end of the table. In a while, Adam found his plate full of dished kids served.

Thomas was just happy to get a real home–cooked meal for once – beats takeout any day.

But when he took his first bite, his eyes went wide. Oh my god, he thought, trying not to make those embarrassing food noises people make when something’s ridiculously good.

The salmon was so perfect it was practically melting in his mouth. And that veal? Better

than any fancy restaurant he’d been to. He had to stop himself from literally licking the plate clean.

“Uncle Adam, you’ve gotta try this salmon!” Lily bounced in her seat with excitement.

“And the veal too – Mom makes them better than any restaurant!”

“Do you like it?” Lucas couldn’t stop watching Adam’s face as they piled food on his plate.

Adam sampled each dish with genuine appreciation. “It’s excellent,” he said simply, but

his sincerity was evident.

The triplets exchanged excited glances, their eyes lighting up like Christmas lights. Their hearts soared with joy as they watched him savor the exact same dishes they loved. Of course! they thought triumphantly. Even his taste in food is just like ours! It was one more piece of evidence to add to their mental list – more proof that he had to be their father.

Irene watched her kids as they fussed over Adam. She’d never seen them go this crazy over someone before – not even when they were trying to sweet talk her into buying them ice cream. They’re definitely up to something, she thought. She knew her kids way too well to buy this innocent act. The way they worked together, how they kept trying to get his attention… Then it hit her. Oh no. They’re not… they couldn’t be trying to…
