Chapter 17: An Unexpected Invitation
The midday sun bathed Emerald Garden Estate in warm light as three kids stood at their neighbor’s door. Just a moment ago, they’d rung the doorbell, a start of their newly
crafted plan – and now their hearts were racing like crazy.
“Remember what we practiced,” Alex whispered, trying to sound like the confident big brother he wanted to be, even though his stomach was doing backflips. Even at five, he had that adorable mini–boss vibe going.
Lily and Lucas nodded in sync, their faces both nervous and excited.
“It’ll work,” Lily whispered back, fidgeting with her dress yet again. “I just know it.”
Before Alex could answer, the door swung open to reveal Thomas, Mr. Haven’s ever- present assistant.
Thomas looked down, surprise flickering across his face as he registered the three children standing on the doorstep. “Oh, it’s you three. Is something wrong?”
Alex stepped forward, chin lifted slightly. “Is Mr. Haven available?”
“He’s here, yes.” Thomas’s tone held a note of curiosity. He’d never had children show up
at the door asking for his boss before.
Before he could say more, movement from inside caught everyone’s attention. Adam appeared in his. wheelchair, smoothly navigating through the doorway. His expression showed a flicker of surprise at finding three familiar faces on his doorstep.
–
The triplets immediately perked up, stepping forward in perfect unison. Their synchronization would have been comical if it wasn’t so endearing. Three pairs of eyes exact replicas of Adam’s own, though he hadn’t quite processed that fact yet – looked up
at him with a mixture of hope and determination.
As one, they bowed slightly – a gesture that looked both adorably formal and slightly out of place coming from five–year–olds. Alex took point, his little face scrunched up in concentration as he delivered their carefully rehearsed apology.
“Mr. Haven, we’re really sorry!” His voice came out clear and steady, though his cheeks puffed out slightly with the effort of maintaining his composure. “We want to apologize

for the mix–up at the airport, and for Lily following you, and for all the confusion we caused. We hope you can forgive us.”
“We’re sorry!” Lucas and Lily chimed in, bobbing their heads so fast their curls went bouncing everywhere.
Adam just stared for a moment, one eyebrow going up as he took in the scene before him. Three of the most adorable kids he’d ever seen (not that he’d admit that out loud), looking up at him with those big earnest eyes, acting like this was the most important moment of their lives. He tried to keep his face stern – he had a reputation to maintain, after all – but he could feel his lips twitching, fighting back a smile.
“It’s in the past,” he said, his voice coming out way softer than his usual CEO tone. Something about these kids just got to him, making all his usual ice–king vibes start melting away.
The change in his voice wasn’t lost on the kids. Lily’s whole face lit up like Christmas had come early. “See? I told you Mr. Haven was nice! He’s so handsome and kind – I just knew he wouldn’t stay mad at us!”
“A gentleman always shows grace,” Lucas added, trying to sound super grown–up even though his chubby cheeks were practically vibrating with excitement.
Thomas couldn’t help grinning from his spot by the door. In all the years he’d worked for Adam, he’d never seen anyone – let alone kids – warm up to his boss this fast. Most kids took one look at Adam’s scary–boss face and ran for the hills.
Adam cleared his throat, doing his best to hold onto at least a little of his usual don’t- mess–with–me attitude. “I assume you didn’t come here just to tell me how nice I am?”
Alex’s face lit up at the opening. “Actually, we wanted to invite you over for lunch! Since we’re neighbors now,” he gestured vaguely in the direction of their villa, “we thought maybe we could all have lunch together? To make up for everything and get to know each
other better?”
A brief silence followed as Adam considered the invitation. These children who’d somehow managed to bypass all his usual defenses with their disarming honesty – there was something about them that made his usual automatic refusal stick in his throat.
“You three head back first,” he found himself saying. “I’ll join you shortly.”

The transformation in their faces was instantaneous. Their eyes widened with pure delight, their attempts at maintaining mature expressions crumbling in the face of unbridled joy. They were trying so hard to act grown–up about it, but their happiness bubbled over in barely suppressed bounces and radiant smiles. The way they looked at him, with such open adoration and eager anticipation, stirred something unexpected in
Adam’s chest.
He found himself oddly touched by their transparent emotions. These children wore their hearts on their sleeves, their genuine affection for him clear in every gesture and expression. It was refreshingly different from the calculated interactions he was used to in his business world.
“Really?” Lucas couldn’t contain himself. “Oh, you’re in for a treat, Mr. Haven! Mom’s cooking is amazing!”
Adam’s lips twitched again. “Since I’m coming over as a guest, we should bring something. Thomas, select an appropriate gift to take with us.”
“Yes, sir,” Thomas responded promptly, though his eyes sparkled with poorly concealed
amusement.
The triplets made their exit hand in hand, practically skipping down the path. Their excited whispers floated back on the warm afternoon air, punctuated by little hops of joy they couldn’t quite suppress.
As he watched them go, Adam found himself struck by how natural their presence had felt. Children usually shied away from him, intimidated by his stern demeanor and the wheelchair. But these three… they looked at him like they’d known him forever, their affection as pure and warming as the midday sun. The realization that they genuinely wanted his company, without any hidden agenda, left him with an unfamiliar feeling of
contentment.
“Thomas.”
“Sir?”
“Make sure the gift is appropriate for children their age as well.”
Thomas’s smile widened slightly. “Of course, sir.”

As the door closed, three small figures continued their celebration down the path, their mission accomplished beyond their wildest hopes. Phase two of Operation Mom’s
Happiness was officially underway, though their unsuspecting neighbor had no idea he was the star player in their carefully orchestrated plan.
“Did you see how he smiled?” Lily whispered excitedly. “He tried to hide it, but I saw it!”
“Operation Successful!” Lucas declared, doing a little victory dance.
