Six months after I’d officially received the divorce papers, I got a call from a number in Shanghai.

The ER doctor told me Jack had gotten into an argument with his girlfriend while driving, which led to a car accident. He was seriously injured.

Before going into surgery, he wanted to say a few words to me.

Worried that I might reject a call from his phone, he had asked the doctor to reach out instead.

I told the doctor, “He must have dialed the wrong number. I don’t know who that is.”

Later, a mutual acquaintance filled me in.

Jack survived the accident, but it left him with lasting injuries that affected some of his bodily functions.

Emma, on the other hand, had severe leg injuries, leaving her confined to a wheelchair for life.

Her family seized the opportunity, demanding that Jack take responsibility for her care forever.

After their wedding, Jack, who had rarely touched alcohol before, started drinking heavily. He neglected Emma in the process.

One night, when Jack was drunk, he accidentally set a fire while burning paper money in the house. Neither he nor Emma made it out.
