Chapter 35: Second Accidental Touch–1
Thomas couldn’t help the laugh that escaped him. In all his years working for Haven Enterprise, he’d never heard anyone compare his powerful, intimidating boss to “a side of beef in the butcher’s willow.” The mental image was just too much.
Irene caught herself, realizing how that must have sounded. “Sorry, that’s just something we used to say in medical school,” she explained quickly. “It helps maintain professional distance during examinations.”
*No need to explain.” Adam’s voice could have frozen fire. “This isn’t teaching hospital.”
Irene managed an awkward smile, suddenly very aware that this was in fact, his private bedroom. The medical equipment might be professional grade, but the setting was decidedly not clinical. Adam feclined against the headboard in silk pajamas, and the intimacy of the situation wasn’t lost on her.
She sat down at the edge of the bed, focusing on arranging her equipment with practiced efficiency. “Adam,” she said carefully, “you are objectively more attractive than the average patient. But I assure you, I maintain strict professional boundaries. Besides,” she gestured toward Thomas, who was hovering nearby, “we’re not exactly alone. This is simply a medical procedure there’s no need for
concern.”
“Thomas, could you help roll up his pant legs? Just to the knees will be fine.”
As Thomas carefully assisted, Irene explained, “The nerve points we need to treat are primarily in your calves. Last time’s clothing change was only necessary because of your formal wear.”
She felt oddly defensive about her professional integrity. But as Thomas stepped back, the words died in her throat.
Oh.
She really shouldn’t have made that butcher shop comparison.
The Adam Haven she was used to seeing commanded attention from his wheelchair – all crisp suits and unapproachable CEO energy. This version, lounging against silk pillows in perfectly tailored sleepwear, was… different. The fabric draped in ways that suggested an impressive physique beneath, and the casual elegance of his pose was almost unfair.
Their eyes met briefly. Irene quickly looked away, mentally scolding herself. Focus. You’re a doctor, for crying out loud.
She placed the electrodes with careful precision, hyper–aware of maintaining a clinical touch. “Please tell me if you feel anything at
all.”
“There.” Adam’s response was immediate. “I can feel it now.”
“What kind of sensation?”
“Like a current. Sharp, almost painful.”
Irene nodded, making careful notes while adjusting the stimulation levels. She worked methodically through each nerve point, recording every response. By the time she finished, a light sheen of sweat had formed on her forehead.
Thomas appeared with water, which she accepted gratefully. “We’ll need to observe for about thirty minutes to ensure there’s no
adverse reaction.”
The clock showed 10:30 PM by the time she completed her final checks. Her shoulders ached from maintaining precise control for so long. I’ll go prepare the therapeutic bath,” she said, gathering her notes. “The data looks promising – the nerve responses are stronger than last time.”
Chapter 35: Second Accidental Touch–1
She was almost to the door when Thomas called out. “Dr. Sterling, wit!”
She turned, surprised by the urgency in his voice.
“Could you… help us get the boss to the bathroom?”
Even sitting down, Adam cut an imposing figure. His height and build made Thomas’s request seem suddenly daunting.
“Alright, Irene agreed, trying to sound casual as she stepped forward to help.
Thomas bent to support Adam from the bed, and Irene moved to assist. She wasn’t prepared for just how solid Adam was with Thomas bearing most of the weight, she had to slip her arm around his waist to properly support him.

While Irene was focused entirely on the logistics of the task, Adam went suddenly rigid at her touch. Her small hand at his waist, warm even through the silk of his pajamas, was impossible to ignore His jaw tightened as she drew closer, her subtle jasmine scent filling his senses.

Chapter 35: Second Accidental Touch–2
The situation became even more awkward as they maneuvered through the bathroom doorway. The space suddenly felt impossibly narrow, Irene couldn’t step back without dropping him, which meant she was practically pressed against his chest. Her face was at the level of his collarbone, and every breath brought in the subtle nefes of his cologne – something expensive and masculine that made her head spin slightly.
They were far too close. Irene tried to adjust her position, but the movement caused her to tilt her head back. Her lips accidentally brushed against his collarbone, and they both froze at the unexpected contact.
Irene felt her face flame. Had she really just… accidentally kissed Adam’s collarbone? God, what was she thinking? He was going to think she’d done it on purpose!
Thomas, completely oblivious to the charged moment, helped ease Adam into the therapeutic bath. The warm water rose to his waist as he settled in.
“Dr. Sterling, are you alright? Your face is quite red,” Thomas noted with concern.
Irene nearly jumped out of her skin. “It’s just the steam!” she blurted backing toward the door. “Everything’s set up, so I’ll head out now. And remember no clothes in the bath!”
–
She practically fled, not daring to look at Adam’s expression. She could have sworn she heard a soft chuckle follow her hasty retreat.
After they left, Adam sat alone in the therapeutic bath, his lips curving into a slight smile as he remembered the blush that had stained Irene’s cheeks. He removed his clothes and sank deeper into the warm water, letting his muscles relax as the heat enveloped him. His eyes drifted closed, but he couldn’t quite meditate like usual.
The spot where her lips had brushed his collarbone still tingled. He found himself reaching up to touch it, the phantom sensation making his skin prickle. Even now, he could recall the exact moment her soft gasp of surprise, the way she’d practically bolted
from the room…
Back in her own villa, Irene’s face was still burning. She touched her lips absently, remembering that brief, accidental contact. Her heart was doing strange things in her chest.
“Mom? Are you okay?” Alex’s voice made her jump. She spun to find her eldest watching her with concern from the living room sofa. “Are you sick? Your face is all red.”
Irene backed up against the front door, her heart still racing. “I’m fine! Just… the steam from the therapeutic bath. It was very warm in there.”
Alex accepted this explanation easily, but his next question didn’t help her composure. “How did Uncle Adam’s treatment go?”
Just hearing Adam’s name made her remember that moment in the bathroom. She felt her face heat up again as she struggled to keep her voice steady. “Fine! Everything went fine.”
Desperate to change the subject, she asked, “Why aren’t you in bed, sweetheart? It’s so late.”
“I wanted to wait up for you,” Alex said simply. “So you’d have a light to come home to.”
He punctuated this with a huge yawn, making Irene’s heart melt. She crossed the room and swept him into her arms, pressing a kiss to his baby–soft cheek. The familiar scent of baby shampoo and innocence helped ground her. “My sweet, thoughtful boy,” she
murmured. “What would I do without you?”

Alex snuggled closer, wrapping his arms around her neck with complete trust. Mother and son headed upstairs together, leaving the events of the evening behind.
But as Trene tucked Alex in and retreated to her own room, she couldn’t quite forget the feeling of silk under her fingers, or the brief touch of her lips against warm skin. What was happening to her carefully maintained professional distance?
