Chapter 27: An Unexpected Touch
Irene was about to knock on Adam’s bedroom door when she stopped dead in her tracks. The door was slightly ajar, giving her an unexpected view that made her heart skip a beat.
Adam had already loosened his tic, the expensive silk hanging carelessly around his neck. His long fingers moved deliberately down his shirt, each button coming undone with practiced ease. Even such simple task carried that same commanding presence he brought to everything – methodical, precise, totally focused. The fable parted gradually, revealing glimpses of tanned skin underneath as he worked his way down.
He sat straight in his wheelchair, his back to the door, completely unaware of his audience. The warm evening light streaming through his windows caught the subtle shift of muscles across his shoulders as he shrugged one arm free of his shirt sleeve, then the other. It was like watching a sculptor’s masterpiece come to life, she couldn’t help but stare. For someone confined to a wheelchair, his physique was incredible – broad shoulders, perfectly sculpted back muscles, the kind of build that belonged on the cover of a fitness magazine.
Being a mother of three hadn’t prepared her for this. Despite all her years of medical training, Irene had never looked at a man’s body quite so directly before. Something about the unguarded intimacy of the moment made her distinctly uncomfortable.
Get a grip, she told herself. You’re literally a doctor. Bodies are your job. But somehow, this felt different. This wasn’t just any patient – this was Adam Haven, and catching him in such a private moment felt… wrong? Exciting? She didn’t want to examine that feeling too closely..
Behind her, Thomas cleared his throat softly, saving her from her spiraling thoughts. She jumped slightly as he stepped forward to knock on the door frame.
“Sir? Dr. Sterling is here.”
Adam didn’t turn around right away, his movements staying measured and deliberate. “Come in,” he said, his voice somehow managing to sound commanding even while half–dressed. He reached for what looked like pajamas on the bed, taking his time about,
- it.
Irene kept her eyes glued to the floor as she walked in. “I’ll get the therapeutic bath ready,” she said quickly, making a beeline for the bathroom. Anything to escape the weird tension in the air.
The bathroom became her sanctuary. This was familiar territory – checking water temperature, measuring out herbs and minerals with careful precision. Each ingredient had to be perfect. Too much of anything could mess up the treatment’s effectiveness. The rising steam carried the sharp, clean scent of medicinal herbs, helping clear her head.
“Twenty minutes should do it,” she called out to Thomas, scribbling down temperatures and measurements in her notes. Every detail mattered for tracking progress. “These herbs are meant to stimulate the nerves,” she explained to Thomas. “We can’t let him soak for too long, or it might cause adverse effects.”
“Got it, Dr. Sterling.”
After one final temperature check, she headed back into the bedroom. Adam had changed into what had to be the fanciest pajamas she’d ever seen – probably cost more than her entire wardrobe. She tried really hard not to notice how good they looked on him.
“Here.” She pulled out a small bottle of medication. “Take one before bed every night.”
Adam’s eyebrow shot up as he looked at the bottle. “And this is…?”
Something about his skeptical tone rubbed her the wrong way. “What worried I might poison you?” she snapped before she could stop herself. “Fine, if you don’t trust it-” She started to pull her hand back.
His fingers closed around the bottle before she could move, accidentally trapping her hand. For a moment, everything went still.

Chapter 27: An Unexpected Touch
The touch lasted maybe two seconds, but it felt like forever. His hand was surprisingly warm, his fingers brushing against hers in a way that sent little electric shocks up her arm. Their eyes met over their joined hands, and suddenly the air felt way too thick to
breathe.
“If Dr. Sterling prescribed it,” his voice had gone all low and deep, deng weird things to her insides, “it must be worth taking.”
Irene yanked her hand back like she’d been burned, trying to ignore how her skin tingled where he’d touched her. “Well… good! Just… make sure you follow the instructions. And don’t stay in the bath fo
long timing matters for the treatment to work right.”
She was rambling. She never rambled. She was Dr. Irene Sterling, for crying out loud. She did complicated surgery for breakfast. So why was one tiny touch turning her into a babbling mess?
“If that’s everything…” She backed toward the door, desperately trying to look professional while planning her escape. “I’ll check on
you tomorrow.”
She didn’t exactly run away, but it was close. Her heels clicked faster and faster against the fancy marble floors as she made her getaway, her heart doing some kind of crazy dance in her chest. She could still feel where his fingers had touched hers, could still see that moment when their eyes had locked…
Stop it, she ordered herself. He’s just another patient. That’s all.
But as she hurried home through the cool evening air, she knew she was lying to herself.
She shook her head, trying to clear away these strange, unexpected feelings. Taking a deep breath of fresh air, she headed upstairs to tuck in her three little troublemakers, then returned to her own room to get ready for bed.
Back in his room, Adam sat there studying the little bottle, his thumb running over the spot where their fingers had touched. His face gave nothing away, but something had changed in those striking eyes of his – something that said he’d definitely noticed the way Dr. Sterling had practically fled the room.
The corners of his lips curved into the slightest hint of a smile, his thumb still tracing that point of contact. His smile lingered as
a smile that said maybe, just maybe, this doctor’s visits were going to be more interesting than he d he studied the medicine bottle expected.
