Genius Kids‘ Scheme Claiming Daddy’s Billionaire Empire
Chapter 25: Is That a Hint of Disdain I Detect?
Irene couldn’t help smiling as she watched her kids work their charm on yet another adult who probably hadn’t been around children since… well, ever.
Adam kept sneaking these subtle glances at her when he thought she wasn’t looking. She caught him doing it again just as Thomas decided to open his mouth.
“You know, Dr. Sterling, Thomas said, practically tripping over himself to make conversation, “there’s just something about the way you carry yourself. Like old money, you know? With your medical skills and all, I bet you come from one of those prestigious doctor families, right?”
Irene managed a smile that definitely didn’t reach her eyes. There was this flash of something in her face – gone super quick, but definitely there.
Adam caught it instantly. One look from those intense eyes of his, and Thomas shut up mid–sentence. Message received: some topics were off–limits.
Her phone saved the day, buzzing right on cue. The moment she saw who it was, her whole face lit up. “Excuse me,” she said, stepping away. “Grandpa?”
“My dear girl!” Joseph Sterling’s voice came through warm and clear. “How are you settling
in?”
“We’re good,” Irene said, actually meaning it for once. “The kids are literally dying to see you. And we’ve got your room all set up – tons of space, amazing view. You’re gonna love it when you move in.”
While their mom was on the phone, her little gang saw their chance. Alex sidled up to Adam’s wheelchair like he was on some secret mission.
“So like,” he started, doing that head–tilt thing kids do when they’re super curious, “what do you do for fun? Besides all that CEO stuff?”
Adam’s mouth did this weird almost–smile thing. “Just this. Getting some air.”
The way he said it made Alex’s eyes narrow. Even a five–year–old could spot loneliness
when it was that obvious.

“Hold up,” Lucas jumped in, face scrunching up like someone had just told him Santa wasn’t real. “Just with Thomas? That’s literally it?”
Adam’s shrug basically screamed “what can you
do?”
“Oh. My. God.” Lucas threw his hands up like he was dealing with a hopeless case. “That’s like… the most depressing thing ever.”
Thomas’s eyebrows shot up. “Is that a hint of disdain I detect?”
“Well, duh!” Lucas was on a roll now. “Mr. Haven’s totally gorgeous, but instead of having a girlfriend, he’s stuck with your face all day!”
The look on Thomas’s face was absolutely priceless. Even Adam couldn’t keep it together – his lips actually twitched like they were thinking about smiling.
“When you put it that way,” Adam admitted, “it does sound pretty sad.”
Lily, never one to miss out on the action, crept closer to Adam’s wheelchair. Her tiny hand found his like it was the most natural thing ever.
“Guess what?” she bounced in place, too excited to stay still. “We already have pets! They’re just stuck in R Country right now – stupid paperwork and stuff. But once they get here, you’ll have us and them to hang out with. No more being lonely!”
–
The pure sweetness in her voice did something weird to Adam’s chest. These kids just kept bulldozing through his carefully built walls like they didn’t even exist.
Lucas, apparently feeling like the conversation needed his expert input, planted his hands on his hips and puffed out his chest like a miniature CEO. “Next time you wanna get out, just hit us up!” He nodded sagely. “Like, no offense Thomas, but your face? All day? That’s
gotta get old.”
Thomas lost it completely, doubling over with laughter. Even Adam couldn’t maintain his stern expression, a genuine smile breaking through for just a moment.
Thomas couldn’t help laughing at Lucas’s sass. The kid was something else, turning every moment into a tiny comedy show.
Adam sat quietly in his wheelchair, his gaze falling to where Lily’s small hand rested in

his. Her tiny fingers barely covered half his palm, delicate and trusting. Watching the triplets bounce around with their endless energy, he found himself warming to the idea of their company during these previously dull evening outings. Their presence brought life to what had always been a solitary routine. At least it wouldn’t be so monotonous
anymore.
“You have a point,” he admitted quietly, surprising even himself with the agreement.
The triplets‘ eyes lit up instantly. Phase one of Operation Get Close to Daddy: Success!
Irene finished her call and rejoined them, taking in the unexpectedly cheerful scene.
“What’s got everyone so happy?”
“Uncle Adam goes out for fresh air after work every day,” Lily explained, her voice full of that child–like certainty that made everything sound perfectly logical. “We decided we’ll keep him company from now on! That way he won’t be stuck with just Thomas all the time. Besides, we’re neighbors now, and neighbors should look out for each other, right?”
“We can walk with him every day!” Lucas chimed in eagerly.
Irene raised an eyebrow at her children, not fooled for a second. “Such thoughtful neighbors,” she said dryly. “Though I suspect you three just found a convenient excuse to play outside more.”
The triplets didn’t even try to deny it, just flashing those angel–faced grins that usually
got them out of trouble. Irene shook her head, but she didn’t object.
Instead, she turned to Adam, switching seamlessly into doctor mode. “How are you feeling
after the first treatment? Any reactions to the nerve stimulation?”
“Some areas feel sore,” Adam replied after a moment’s consideration.
“That’s actually good,” Irene nodded, her voice professional but gentle. “It’s a normal
response to the treatment – it means the nerve stimulation is working. Remember,
recovery is gradual. We need to keep at it consistently.” She paused, then added, “Call me before you go to bed tonight. I’ll need to prepare the therapeutic bath myself – the
measurements for those herbs have to be exact.”
Her straightforward, no–nonsense explanation seemed to reassure him. Adam nodded, accepting both her expertise and authority in this matter.
