Chapter 11
When I arrived at the hospital, I was rushed straight into the emergency room. Thomas immediately contacted the city’s top dermatologist to consult on my injuries. He stayed by my side the entire time.
We had dated for three years. Then, he proposed to me right after graduation. In our four years of marriage, he treated me like a child, supported my career, and showed me the utmost love and care. Now, seeing the state I was in, his eyes turned bloodshot, and he looked as though he might cry.
I couldn’t bear to see him like that, so I tried to comfort him, “It’s okay, honey. I just got into a fight with a few wretched women. A few days of rest, and I’ll-”
I broke off, coughing uncontrollably. No matter how hard I tried to downplay the situation, my suffering revealed the truth.
Thomas clenched his jaw. His voice was cold and filled with fury. “Anyone who hurts my woman is asking for trouble.”
The doctors soon performed a thorough checkup on me. Other than some inflammation in the lung from choking on water, the rest of my injuries were external. Still, my face was nearly unrecognizable. Each cut that ran across my skin was long and deep.
Staring at the reflection of my face, now bandaged up like a mummy, a surge of hatred boiled inside me. I vowed to make Haley and her lackeys pay for this. Meanwhile, Haley wasn’t doing much better.
Word got out that Joel had beaten her so badly she was coughing up blood. She landed in the hospital too.
Thomas‘ assistant had also uncovered the truth. When Haley and Joel started dating, he never revealed his real identity. He simply told her he worked at Novalux Group.
As Thomas‘ driver, Joel often traveled between our home and the Novalux CEO’s office. That, combined with Haley’s vanity, led her to believe that Joel was the CEO.
Given Thomas‘ low profile and the fact that he avoided media exposure, Haley never realized the truth. And so, the farce continued.
