Boyfriend's Wrong Bet on False Rich Girl - Chapter 4
“I don’t care if it’s your father’s birthday or even a grand family event. The proposal is due first thing tomorrow morning. If it’s not completed, you’re not allowed to leave work.”
A scornful smile played on his lips, and his words were filled with caustic irony. During dinner time, I made a phone call to my father and told him about the situation.
My father flew into a rage, and soon all the relatives knew that I was made to work overtime because of a colleague’s harassment.
Everyone who took Kevin’s side today was noted down by my relatives and blacklisted from their respective companies.
I obediently stayed up all night at the office to make another version of the proposal and submitted it to Kaiden first thing the next morning.
As expected, he was dissatisfied. He made me revise it over a dozen times until he reluctantly accepted it.
By then, the proposal had been so drastically altered that it was barely recognizable, vague and indefinite.
In a large company, with the boss seldom visiting the grassroots departments, employees with even a little power were prone to creating difficulties for others.
I joined the company as an intern partly with this intention.
You had to drive away the flies before they landed on the fruit; otherwise, once the skin started to rot, the whole fruit would be spoiled.
“Yeah, I regretted it right after I paid the money. Thirty to fifty thousand dollars.”
“It’s too embarrassing to wear it out, and it’s not presentable enough to give it away as a gift. It just annoys me whenever I look at it.”
I was sitting in the back seat chatting with my best friend, and out of the corner of my eye, I caught sight of Leo looking at me through the rearview mirror.
When we arrived at the door of my house, I got out of the car carrying the big and small bags I had just bought from the mall and deliberately left a watch box behind.
“Why worry? I heard it all. It’s just thirty to fifty thousand dollars, and she doesn’t like it at all.”
“She buys so many things every time. She never opens them and just gives them away after some time. She won’t remember all these things.”
“Besides, whenever she can’t find something, she just buys another one instead of really looking for it. Just give it to Kevin as you planned. Didn’t you say he happened to want a watch?”
Leo once had an improper relationship with another woman in my dad’s car.
My father was disgusted by it but let it go after giving him a few warnings, considering Leo’s over ten years of service. He just got a new car instead.
To prevent Leo from getting up to mischief again, a miniature listening device was installed in the new car to monitor him.
Listening to the conversation between Leo and Luna through my earpiece, I happily directed a nanny to sort and put away my newly purchased clothes.
These days, I posted about watches worth tens of thousands of dollars, complaining about which one to give to my “new boyfriend” and sometimes pretending to be short of money.
My Facebook was only visible to Kevin, and within a week, he started dropping hints to Luna that he wanted a watch.
Tens of thousands of dollars was an amount that was neither too high nor too low, just within the range that an only daughter from a “normal family” like me could afford but would still hesitate about.
The amount was too large for Kevin to feel comfortable asking Luna for it, and neither Luna nor Leo dared to take it.
With my internship coming to an end soon, I couldn’t wait to get rid of these two scoundrels.
In this era of the rule of law, you could not just take the law into your own hands.
Since I didn’t have a marriage certificate with Kevin, the marriage laws didn’t apply, so I had to rely on the criminal law.
Three days later, when I saw the Patek Philippe 6300G on Kevin’s wrist, I immediately made a scene at the company.
“Kevin, where did you get that watch? I just lost one that looks exactly the same as it.”
Everyone in the office area watched as I grabbed Kevin’s wrist and wouldn’t let go, like a shrew, and they exchanged glances as if to say how absurd I was.
“Ava, are you crazy? This is what my girlfriend gave me just yesterday. What do you mean you lost it? This watch costs tens of thousands of dollars. You probably haven’t even touched one before.”
Kevin pulled his hand back and wiped the watch carefully as if it were a precious
treasure.
What a miser!
“This is my watch. How could it be given to you by your girlfriend? Take it off and let me have a look.”
I kept pestering and lunged forward to snatch it, but Kevin pushed me away roughly.
“I’ve told you so many times. Stop playing these tricks. You just want to get close to me, don’t you? Give it up. Luna is the only one I love.”
Since the team leader blatantly took sides with Kevin, he had become more and more overbearing at the company, and more and more people were fawning over him.
After his affectionate declaration of love for Luna, the colleagues who had been whispering among themselves began to speak up to defend him.
“Ava, what you’re saying is absurd. Kevin’s girlfriend is the heiress of our group. How could she steal your watch?”
“Exactly. You’re always hanging around Kevin, and now you’re throwing yourself at him, trying to break up a couple. That’s really disgusting.”
“Kevin and his girlfriend are deeply in love. Since you couldn’t seduce him, you’re now accusing him of theft. We’re all witnesses and can testify on Kevin’s behalf.”
Everyone was talking all at once, more excited than Kevin himself.
Kevin looked up at me, his eyes filled with complacency.
“Are you sure about this?” I calmly took out my phone, glanced at the people who had just spoken, and silently noted down their names in my mind. “Hello, is this police? I’d like to report a theft.”
When the police arrived, I was being lectured by my team leader.
As soon as the police entered, Kaiden immediately changed his expression and went up to them.
“Sir, sorry for troubling you to come here. It’s just that one of our employees behaved inappropriately, and I’ve already given her a serious scolding.”
“Who called the police?” The police officers clearly didn’t fall for his trick and continued walking towards the office area.
Kaiden followed behind dejectedly, with a slight stoop in his back, just like a servile
minion in ancient times.
“I called the police, officers. He stole my watch.”
“What’s going on? Explain it step by step.”
Kevin broke free from my grasp and quickly dragged me in front of the police officers.
“Sir, this watch was a gift from my girlfriend. This woman is delusional and has been chasing me. After I rejected her, she filed a false report to get revenge on me. Everyone here can testify to that.”
The police officers looked at both of us respectively and finally decided to take us to the police station for further handling.
“Hold on for a moment. I need to get something.”
I went back to my workstation, opened the drawer, and put the things inside into my handbag.
“Ava, what are you stalling for? Are you scared? I don’t have so much time to waste on your little tricks. Just admit your guilt already.”
I smiled at Kevin while holding my bag.
“Of course, I’m just getting the purchase proof. It has the serial number of the watch I bought on it. Whether you stole it or not will be clear once we check it at the police station.”
Kevin’s expression froze slightly. Being as poor as he was, he had never heard of the serial number of a watch before.
Seeing how confident I was, he started to feel a bit panicked.
In the police car, Kevin turned to look at me several times and sent a few messages to Luna on his phone.
“This is the invoice for my watch purchase, and this is the warranty card.” I laid out each item on the table one by one.
“The watch was bought in Courris. There’s only one Patek Philippe store in Courris. You can go and retrieve the sales records there.”
The two police officers who responded to the call examined the evidence I presented one by one.
After seeing the amount on the invoice, they exchanged a look.
“And you, you said your girlfriend gave it to you. Call her in, and we’ll take her statement.”
While waiting for Luna to arrive at the police station, Kevin was visibly fidgety. Faced with the conclusive evidence I calmly presented, he grew increasingly uneasy.
“Kevin, what’s going on? Why are you at the police station?”
Luna asked as soon as she arrived.
“Luna, what a coincidence. So you’re Kevin’s girlfriend? That’s how the watch ended up his hands.”
I, who had been keeping my head down all along, stood up and greeted Luna.
She froze the moment she saw me, standing rigidly on the spot, unable to move.
Kevin seemed to sense that something was wrong and quickly grabbed Luna. “Luna, what’s happening? How do you know Ava?”
“Sir, she’s the daughter of my driver. I just left my watch in the car, and then it went missing.”
I slowly sat down, looked at Kevin and Luna, and spoke in a composed manner.
The public price of this watch is over six million dollars. I went to great lengths to source it from abroad.
You can’t buy it on the market for less than ten million dollars. It’s such a big case. You two had better hire good lawyers as soon as possible.
“What’s going on? The driver’s daughter? Didn’t you say your family was rich?”
Kevin gripped Luna’s shoulders tightly, finally realizing her true identity.
“Wealthy? Compared to your family, perhaps. After all, her parents work as a maid and a driver for my family, and we pay them quite handsomely.”
Luna’s disguise was completely ripped off by me. Her face turned livid, her eyes wide with fury, filled with overwhelming hatred as she lunged at me, only to be firmly held back by the two officers.
“Ava, you knew all along! You did this on purpose! This watch isn’t just thirty to fifty thousand dollars. How could it be worth millions?”
“Luna, you lied to me! Officers, I had no idea. Luna stole the watch; it has nothing to do with me.”
“Kevin! You coward, you pathetic loser. How dare you insult me? You came running like a dog at the slightest hint. You’ve only got yourself to blame!”
Kevin and Luna turned on each other like two rabid dogs.
I had indeed done it deliberately.
I first bought an ordinary watch with a similar color combination and left it in the car.
After Leo and Luna confirmed that the watch was only worth a few tens of thousands of dollars, I swapped it with the Patek Philippe.
Luna, despite having seen many of my luxury items while growing up, mostly clothes and bags, couldn’t possibly tell the difference between two watches with such similar colors.
