Chapter 2
Chapter 2 I’m the Backup
Yolanda’s temper flared. “Of all the hospitals in Eqifrora, why do you have to come to ours? And why me, specifically?”
Still, Jaslyn showed up the next morning.
The moment she got out of the car, she was swarmed by paparazzi. Luckily, the hospital had arranged security in advance, and with Antwan shielding her, they managed to squeeze into the hospital.
Yolanda had already referred her case to another OB–GYN. However, Jaslyn claimed they were close friends, so the hospital president personally called Yolanda to take over.
The prenatal checks were
reviewing the reports,
This book had been added on your bookshelf.
Yolanda found everything to be normai.
“Your estimated gestational age is ten weeks and three days. Since this is your first prenatal check, you’ll need to register for a prenatal booklet.” She looked away from the screen and turned to Antwan. “The registration steps are posted on the wall behind you. Just follow them.”
Antwan glanced at the instructions and found them troublesome. “You go do it. I’ll stay here with Jaslyn.”
Yolanda looked down and replied, “Sorry, the booklet has to be registered by the expectant mother or her family. I’m a doctor. That’s not my job.”
“Yolanda, can’t you see Jaslyn needs me right now? Can’t you be more understanding?”
“If every patient’s family expected me to be understanding, I might as well be running errands all day.”
Antwan frowned. “You-”
“Next!” Yolanda called out.
Antwan wanted to say something, but Jaslyn stopped him.
“Yolanda, I won’t take up too much of Antwan’s time. Please don’t be
mad.”
Yolanda looked at her. Jaslyn had dangled Antwan for fifteen years under the guise of friendship, keeping him close but never too close, pulling him back in whenever he tried to move on. She knew Antwan was dating Yolanda, yet she accepted his love and devotion and told everyone she and Yolanda were friends.
Yolanda responded flatly, “He’s your fiancé. Isn’t it normal for you to take up his time? Why would I be mad?”
“Are you two having a fight because of me?”
“No. We have already broken up.”
“Yolanda, it’s not what you think. Antwan is just helping me.”
Yolanda raised her hand to cut Jaslyn off, “Don’t flatter yourself. You’re not the reason we broke up.”
“Yolanda! Who gave you the right to speak to Jaslyn like that? Apologize!” Antwan snapped.
Yolanda finally lost her temper.
“Get out!”
Due to her bad attitude, Yolanda was reported. Antwan even made the complaint call right in front of her.
Once they left, she was summoned to the president’s office.
“You do realize our hospital is under the Navarro Medical Group, right?”
Yolanda stayed silent. Of course, she knew.
“And the two people you just dealt with are the most popular female celebrity, Jaslyn Peterson, and the son of the Navarro family.” The president gave her a look, hoping she’d grasp the gravity of her mistake.
“So what?” Yolanda replied, hands in her pockets.
The president slammed the table and snapped, “Yolanda, do you still want to keep your job or not?”
“If the hospital fires me over upsetting Mr. Navarro by turning down his unreasonable request, I’ll file a lawsuit!”
“Don’t be so naïve. That’s the son of the Navarro family we’re talking
about. Do you think you can afford to mess with him?”
“I have patients waiting for me. If there’s nothing else, I’ll get back to my
work.”
*
“Why are you so stubborn!” Seeing that she was about to leave, the president quickly added, “One more thing, Ms. Peterson trusts you, but she can’t always come to the hospital. From now on, you’ll be her attending physician and provide home visits whenever needed.”
“No!”
“You don’t get to say no!”
Back at her office, Yolanda was still agitated. She couldn’t understand how Antwan could do this to her.
She had loved him wholeheartedly for eight years. Did that mean she
deserved to be treated like garbage?
“Here, the booklet’s done.”
She hadn’t expected Antwan and Jaslyn to come back. They didn’t show the slightest guilt at all.
Yolanda gave a sarcastic smile, said nothing, and took the booklet to enter the information into the computer.
“All the important things for pregnant women are listed in the booklet. Make sure you read it. I’ll write the date for the next checkup on the booklet. Don’t forget to come.”
As she spoke, she jotted the date down in the booklet.
“Jaslyn is very busy, and so am I. That’s why I need you to remind me to bring her over,” Antwan said.
Yolanda paused mid–writing and replied, “Sorry, I’m even busier than you two. And I don’t like keeping track of other people’s affairs.”
“Jaslyn’s business is my business, and my business is yours. Just remember to remind me. What’s with all the nonsense?”
“Antwan.” Yolanda looked up at him. So many emotions surged inside her, but at that moment, they all faded. “We’ve broken up. I don’t want to repeat myself. Go ahead and file another complaint if you want. But I’m following hospital protocol and treating all patients equally.”
Antwan pursed his lips. He seemed to sense a certain finality in Yolanda.
“I’ll keep it in mind,” Jaslyn said, tugging lightly at Antwan’s hand. “Yolanda, I’ll be troubling you for a while.”
“It’s no trouble. It’s my job.”
“Then we’ll leave you to your work.”
“Goodbye,” Yolanda replied flatly.
Just as the two stood to leave, several stalker reporters suddenly burst in, all holding up their phones and pointing them at Jaslyn and Antwan.
“Ms. Peterson, are you and Wayne Larsen really just friends? How do you explain being seen entering a hotel together late at night?”
“Mr. Navarro, did you really propose to Ms. Peterson? Or is it just for show?”
“Are you two really a couple, Mr. Navarro? Didn’t Ms. Peterson say you two were just good friends?”
The reporters shoved their way in, pushing and crowding.
Antwan shielded Jaslyn cautiously, but she still got jostled several times.
Security was stuck outside and couldn’t get in. To avoid an accident, Yolanda had no choice but to come out from behind her desk and help Antwan shield Jaslyn.
Antwan immediately handed Jaslyn over to her.
“Protect Jaslyn!”
He turned around and faced the paparazzi, shouting angrily, “Get out! All of you!”
But the reporters, hungry for a scoop, ignored him and kept pushing forward.
One of them got close to Jaslyn but was shoved aside by someone behind. The two shoved each other and ended up crashing toward Jaslyn.
Yolanda quickly stepped in front of Jaslyn to block them, and the two collided with her hard, slamming her waist against the desk.
It hurt like hell.
Just then, Antwan came over to pull Jaslyn away and bumped into Yolanda, knocking her against the desk once more. The pain was so sharp that tears sprang to her eyes.
What did Antwan do? He held Jaslyn in his arms and kissed her…
